The doors to the main lobby at the Oro Valley Northwest Medical Center open and you are greeted by the rich aroma of fine coffee. Desert Rain Coffee has no sign, it doesn’t need one. Follow the smell of great coffee. For those that can’t smell, it is located just to the left as you enter the lobby. You can find it on the Oro Valley Coffee Shop Map.
John Hall at Desert Rain is like an Old World Craftsman. Actually John is a old World Craftsman. While some might think of a Starbucks as the Gold standard of coffee, when you meet John you realize he is the Platinum standard.
No employees, John’s answer to quality control. He makes every cup of coffee, Espresso, and Latte that goes over the counter.
John roasts his own beans twice a week for quality of product. His espresso machine is hand operated and the beans have to be packed just right. The pressing has to take place in 24 to 28 seconds, shorter doesn’t get the flavorful oils, longer and the extraction is bitter.
Turn that Espresso into a Latte, John uses a small stainless steel pitcher with thermometer, he makes sure the milk swirls in the cup as it heats to the perfect temperature. Then he mixes the coffee and steamed milk into the perfect Latte. Not a frothy imitation, the real thing, just like you would get in Italy.
John, love to explain the process to anyone who will listen. Coffee and the making of great coffee based drinks is his passion.
There are regulars from the Northwest Medical Center Staff and some who just drop by everyday to grab their morning cup of coffee made by John.
If you are in the neighborhood of the Oro Valley Northwest Medical Center stop in and have John fill your prescription for a “Red eye Special”.
The “Arizona Daily Star” ran an article on John and Desert Rain Coffee in October of last year. Chef now owns coffee bar.
